That was it! Like an angry nerd, I finally decided to do something about the occasional cable modem lockup I have been experiencing.

About once every couple of months, my broadband provider would do something on their network to render my cable modem unresponsive, requiring me to power cycle the modem to get the Internets working again. Upgrading to a newer cable modem did not help. Once I learned a nearby relative was experiencing the same issue, I stopped troubleshooting the modem, as the problem was likely being caused by Charter.

What's an engineer to do? Right. Take matters into my own hands and fix it! Er, work around the problem in this case.
