That
was it! Like an angry nerd, I finally decided to do something about the
occasional cable modem lockup I have been experiencing.
About
once every couple of months, my broadband provider would do something on
their network to render my cable modem unresponsive, requiring me to power
cycle the modem to get the Internets working again. Upgrading to a newer cable modem did not help. Once I learned a nearby relative was experiencing the same issue, I stopped troubleshooting the modem, as the problem was likely being caused by Charter.
What's an engineer to do? Right. Take matters into my own hands and fix it! Er, work around the problem in this case.
Cable Modem Watchdog
Does your cable modem occasionally become unresponsive? Does your ISP deny any wrong doing on their end? This blog describes how to automatically cycle power on your cable modem should you lose Internet connectivity.
What's a Wemo?
Who
comes up with these names? I didn't know what a "Wemo" was either until
Newegg tempted me with a Shell Shocker sale. There are different flavors of the Wemo to choose from.
This particular Wemo is called the Wemo Switch, and it allows you to control a standard 120vac household receptacle over your WiFi network.
Sure, i'll take one. Why not?

Plug it In
Follow the Wemo instructions to configure the device. Since the Wemo is hip and trendy, you have to do that from a mobile device, after you have installed the Wemo app.
Plug the Wemo into a receptacle, and then plug your cable modem into the Wemo. Verify you can turn the cable modem on and off from the Wemo app.
Why is Google blog only showing three of my posts? Until I figure that one out, you'll need to click "Older Posts" below to continue reading...
